Benoît Gouez, Cellar Master, Moët & Chandon: Blending News, Ernte 2021
2021 was an extremely challenging year for the Champenois: low yields, frost in spring, rain before harvest - but how can the quality of the still wines actually be assessed? Will there even be vintage wines in five or six years? As always, Benoît Gouez, Chef de caves, Champagne Moët & Chandon, provides highly competent expertise on all of Champagne. Concentrated champagne knowledge in over six minutes in the annual Champagne Library Report.

The future of Champagne?
Vigne Semi Large?! Probably not so fast: More on that in Discours Viticulture. Semi-large - a so-called half-wide vine planting is to be permitted in the near future: the distance between the vines would then be 2 to 2.2 meters, with higher vines - around meters compared to the current 1.20 m to 1.30 meters. According to a study, the use of herbicides could be drastically reduced, according to proponents. 50 percent fewer pesticides would be used, and greenhouse gas emissions would be reduced by 20 percent thanks to more efficient equipment. The half-width vines should also be more resistant to diseases and freak weather. The vines have fewer leaves and a lower risk of contracting and transmitting diseases. Tillage is also made easier. Critics of the new system object that the discussion was not adequately public. It is also difficult to assess the test wines produced in this way, since only a few participants took part in the tastings. In addition, the feasibility is complicated: the winegrower must have different machines for the new and the old production methods during a long transition phase. The matter is not yet dry: the Institut national de l'origine et de la qualité (INAO) has to decide on a final approval.
